Workshop description:

Perpetuum, Mat dance |  Ohad Naharin repertoire

This 10 hour workshop offers an opportunity to explore excerpts of Ohad Naharin’s mat dance from Perpetuum.

 

We will harness quiet, calm yet powerful authenticity in this playful poignant and at times combative duet which takes place entirely on a mat. What does this mat represent? Do its borders confine us or unleash us? Integrating simplistic and complex partnering into moments of stillness and agility the artists will navigate both the intimate and dynamic phrasing that is written in this dance while bringing their own colour and experiences to its interpretation.

 

Yes we will have mats. Yes there is partnering. Yes we can dance together as woman and man, woman and woman, or man and man……

Biography:

Lisa Davies joined Les Grands Ballets Canadiens in 1993 and danced as a soloist in contemporary works by Ohad Naharin, Edouard Lock, William Forsythe, Jiri Kylian, Nacho Duato, Mats Ek and others. Her classical repertoire with GBC included ballets such as Giselle, Les Sylphides, Coppelia, La Fille Mal Gardée, Nutcracker, and numerous works by George Balanchine. Lisa guested with La La La Human steps for the production of Exaucé/Salt in 1998.

She was invited to return to Les Grands Ballets Canadiens as rehearsal director in 2009. Since then she has continued her career, spanning 25 years, in the dance milieu as an invited Ballet Master, Rehearsal Director or Guest Teacher for National Ballet of Canada, Ballet Zurich, Ballet BC, The Akram Khan Company, Stuttgart Ballet, RUBBERBANDance Group, Wayne McGregor Random Dance Company, BJM Danse, Cas Public & Liberamae Performance and Film. Lisa also works as assistant to Christian Spuck setting his full length work Leonce und Lena for various companies, she regularly accompanies Emily Molnar and Ballet BC as a guest teacher and assists rehearsals and she accompanied Guillaume Côté for his creation and collaboration with Robert LePage entitled Frame by Frame with the National Ballet of Canada.

 

In October 2014 she was invited by Catherine Viau and David Pressault Danse to take the helm of Transformation Danse which she integrated as the flagship event of Danse à la Carte, a non-profit organization which she had recently founded. Pulling from her extensive experience, versatility and network as a professional dancer and rehearsal director she has brought forth a new era of support services and projects for professional dancers and choreographers designed to encourage and facilitate research in creation, development and production. In under five years, via this organization, she has provided support to 98 choreographers in the research and development of 99 creations and hosted 19 internationally renowned artists to share rarely accessible skills, approaches and methods with over 500 professional dancers.
