Gaga workshop and Ohad Naharin repertoire
This class is very similar to the daily class that is given to the Batsheva Dance Company dancers. Gaga is a new way of gaining knowledge and self-awareness through your body. Gaga provides a framework for discovering and strengthening your body and adding flexibility, stamina and agility while lightening the senses and imagination. Gaga raises awareness of physical weaknesses, awakens numb areas, exposes physical fixations, and offers ways for their elimination. The work improves instinctive movement and connects conscious and unconscious movement, and it allows for an experience of freedom and pleasure in a simple way, in a pleasant space, in comfortable clothes, accompanied by music, each person with himself and others.
Repertoire of Ohad Naharin
This workshop offers an opportunity to explore excerpts of Ohad Naharin’s choreographic works from one the company’s dancers and teachers. In this class, dancers apply their training in Gaga to the repertory.
Shamel was born in Brooklyn New York and graduated from The Juilliard School. He danced with BJM Dance of Montreal and Mikhail Baryshnikov’s Hell’s Kitchen Dance before joining the Batsheva Danse Company. Since joining the company in 2009 he has performed on international stages around the world performing creations by Ohad Naharin. Described as a dancer with magnetic focus and ferocious abandon he commands attention and has taught Gaga for both the Batsheva Ensemble and the Batsheva Company. Inspired by Tel Aviv’s openness and creativity and a desire to bring more color and another level of art and culture to the night scene he started a fashion magazine and began organizing parties with local collaborators.
